Key to the species

Founded on: Artigas, J.N. & Angulo, A.O. (1980): Revision del genero Mallophora Macquart por sistematica alfa y taxonomia numérica (Diptera - Asilidae). - Gayana. Zoologia. Universidad de Concepcion, Instituto Central de Biologia 43: 182 pp.; Concepcion. [English translation by Baldomero Villegas, amended]

1 Hind tibiae in lateral view, with hairs that increase in length toward the basal third (similar to Fig. 10, Artigas & Angulo, 1980); hairs of the basal half are all white and the rest are dark-greyish. Head with abundant yellowish white hairs. Abdomen with sparse white hair only, mid-tibiae and hind femora with black hair. Hind tarsomeres with dark-greyish hair, dorsum of each tarsomere with white erect hair (female unknown) (Fig. 1, Artigas & Angulo, 1980) . . . . . Mallophora thompsoni Artigas & Angulo, 1980 [FL?, Neotropical region]
- Other combination of characters. 2

2 Abdominal tergites with hair exclusively black; there could be a few lemon-yellowish hairs on the last tergites especially on the side. 3
- Abdominal tergites with hair of different color combinations. 4

3 Scutellum with yellow hair. Tibiae and tarsomeres only with black hair . . . . . Mallophora leschenaultii Macquart, 1838 [TX, Neotropical region]
- Scutellum with black hair . . . . . Mallophora atra Macquart, 1834 [FL, MN?, Neotropical region]

4 Abdominal tergites, at least tergit 2 and following, covered with whitish-yellow to reddish hairs uniform in density and color; or hair yellow on basal tergites and hair reddish on apical three or four tergites. As an exception, all hairs could be black . . . . . Mallophora fautrix Osten-Sacken, 1887 [MEX, SIL, VER, DUR, GUY, NV, TX, AZ, CA, CO?, NM, UT]
- Other combination of characters. 5

5 White hair on abdomen found in one area, in strips or in spots, similar to the color of the hair on the scutellum . . . . . Mallophora bomboides (Wiedemann, 1828) [GA, FL, MS, NC, SC, FL, MEX?]
- Abdomen without white hair; with yellow hair as that of scutellum in diverse combinations with black and reddish . . . . . Mallophora orcina (Wiedemann, 1828) [GA, IN, OH, WV, VA, MD, KY, TN, AL, FL, SC, NC, AZ, NM, TX, OK, AR, LA, MS, AR, KS] 2
