Key to the species

Founded on: Hine, J.S. (1911): Robber flies of the genera Promachus and Proctacanthus. - Annals of the Entomological Society of America 4: 153-172; Columbus. [amended]

Unrecognized species: Promachus perpusilla (Walker, 1851) from North America, Promachus magnus Bellardi, 1861 from Mexico (and TX, AZ, NM), and Promachus painteri Bromley, 1934 from Texas (and MEX).
Remarks: A revision is needed for this genus, especially on the base of the internal structures of the genitalia. P. painteri is a true Promachus (Fisher, pers. note, 2005) ###.

1 Marginal cell r1 with a gray shadow which sometimes is very narrow. 2
- Marginal cell r1 without any trace of a gray shadow. 15

2 Male genitalia without silvery hair above. color of the tibiae usually in striking contrast to that of the femora. 3
- Male genitalia with dense silvery hair above. color of the tibiae very near like that of the femora. 6

3 Gray bands on the dorsum of the abdomen confined to narrow posterior borders of the segments. Gray shadow in the fifth radial cell r5 less than half as wide as the cell. Male genitalia rounded at apex . . . . . Promachus sackeni Hine, 1911 [AZ, UT, NM, TX, MEX]
- Gray bands on the dorsum of the abdomen fully as wide as the black bands. 4

- Thorax deep reddish brown. Male genitalia clothed with black hair. 5

5 Femora reddish or red and black . . . . . Promachus hinei Bromley, 1931 [OH, KS, OH, MO, IL, IN, OK, TX, AR, MS, TN, KY, IA]
- Femora black . . . . . Promachus rufipes (Fabricius, 1775) [IA, IL, IN, OH, PA, MO, MS, KY, TN, AL, GA, SC, NC, WV, VA, FL, DC, AR]

- Abdomen clothed with yellow hair. Mytsax and Beard distinctly yellow. 8

8 Gray shadow in the fifth radial cell r5 wider than the marginal cell r1. Male genitalia almost as long as abdominal segments five, six and seven combined . . . . . Promachus fitchii Osten-Sacken, 1878 [NE, IA, IL, MI, KS, OK, TX, MO, AR, NY, MA, CT, FL, CT, OH, MS, SD, GA, TN, KY, NC]
